The Blood Test Almost Every Woman Losing Her Hair Has Already Passed. And The One Number It Never Measured

Her iron came back normal. The number that actually feeds a hair follicle was never run.

She had been shedding for two years before anyone ran the right test.

Biotin. Collagen. Three different shampoos the internet swore by. A scalp serum that cost more than her weekly shop.

Her doctor ordered blood work twice. Both times the result came back the same way. Normal.

And her hair kept coming out in the shower.

The Question Doctors Never Ask

There is one question that almost never gets asked in that appointment.

Not "is your iron normal." That question gets asked constantly, and it is the wrong one.

The question is whether anyone has measured your ferritin.

Iron and ferritin are not the same number. Iron in your blood is what is circulating right now. Ferritin is what you have in storage. You can have enough iron moving through your bloodstream to keep every standard marker inside its reference range while your storage sits close to empty.

A standard panel checks the circulating number. Ferritin has to be ordered separately, and on most routine requests it simply is not.

So the result comes back normal, and it is technically correct, and it tells you almost nothing about your hair.

Here is why that matters.

When storage runs low, your body does not distribute what is left evenly. It triages. Your heart gets iron. Your brain gets iron. Red cell production gets iron.

Hair is not on that list. A follicle is one of the most metabolically demanding structures in the body and none of it is essential to keeping you alive, so it is among the first things your body stops funding.

The follicle does not die. It downshifts. It spends less time growing and more time resting, and the hairs it does produce come in finer than the ones they replaced.

That is the shedding. That is also the exhaustion, the afternoon flatness and the cold hands, all coming from the same empty shelf.

Reference ranges for ferritin start low, often around 12 or 15. Those ranges were drawn to catch anaemia, not to describe the level a hair follicle needs to run properly. Researchers working on hair loss have argued for years that the functional threshold sits far higher than the bottom of the lab range.

Which is how a woman with a ferritin in the teens gets told she is fine.

The Breakthrough That Changed Everything

Once you know to look for it, the pattern turns up constantly, and so does the second half of the problem.

Most women in this position have already tried iron. It did not work.

There are two usual reasons.

The first is tolerance. The cheap iron salts handed out as standard are hard on the stomach. Constipation, nausea, that metallic heaviness an hour after the dose. A large share of women simply stop taking it, and a supplement in the cupboard does nothing.

The second is that iron on its own is only part of the job. Non-heme iron, the form in every tablet, is poorly absorbed from the gut on its own. And absorbing it is not the same as storing it. Your body has to build red cells and manage the whole process before anything lands in reserve, and that machinery runs on B vitamins.

Take iron with none of that support and you can swallow it for six months, get retested, and watch the number crawl.

That is the gap. Not effort. Not discipline. The formula.

The Complete Ferritin Formula

FerraMax was built around that gap rather than around the iron alone.

It carries iron as ferrous fumarate, at a level intended for daily long term use rather than a short corrective course.

Alongside it sits 120mg of vitamin C, in the same two capsules. Vitamin C is the best established enhancer of non-heme iron absorption there is, and 120mg is a working amount rather than a token one.

Then the conversion side. Vitamin B6 at 8mg, vitamin B12, and folate at 1,467mcg DFE. These are the cofactors your body uses to build red cells and put iron to work.

And then the part the iron products skip entirely. Your follicles are not only waiting on iron. FerraMax includes a dedicated follicle blend: biotin at 600mcg, plus PABA, horsetail, stinging nettle, bamboo and saw palmetto.

Most ferritin formulas address the supply. This one addresses the supply and the follicle at the same time.

The daily ask is two capsules. That is the whole routine.

What The First Three Months Usually Look Like

Rebuilding storage is slow, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something.

You are refilling a reserve that took years to run down. The order in which things change is fairly consistent.

Energy tends to move first, often somewhere in the first month. Not a jolt. The afternoon just stops collapsing.

Shedding is next, usually around week six to eight. The change people notice is the drain and the brush rather than the mirror.

New growth is last, because a follicle that has downshifted has to cycle back before it produces anything. Short new hairs along the hairline and the part are the sign, and they typically show from around month two into month three.

This is why the guarantee runs 90 days rather than 30. Eight to twelve weeks is the earliest point at which there is anything honest to judge, so you get longer than that to decide.

If you want to know whether it is working, ask for a ferritin test before you start and another one at twelve weeks. That number is the one that matters, and it is the only one that will tell you the truth.

Getting Your Ferritin Checked Is The Part That Actually Matters

If your hair is coming out and you are exhausted, and your bloods came back normal, there is a reasonable chance nobody measured your storage.

Ask for it by name. Ferritin. Ask for the number itself, not for whether it is in range, because in range and sufficient are not the same thing.

If it comes back low, you have an explanation, and low ferritin is one of the more fixable causes of hair loss there is.

The pattern is always the same.

Dismissed. Told they were fine. Watched their hair fall out and blamed themselves.

If your hair is falling out and you're exhausted all the time — your ferritin is probably in the teens.

That's not normal. That's not stress. That's not ageing.

Your hair is starving.

Don't wait until you can see your scalp.

Don't wait until you've cried more this year than the last five combined.

Don't wait until you don't recognise yourself anymore.
